HISTORY

Val Grayson entered the United States Army as soon as he could after graduating high school.

Home had given him little reason to stay.

Raised primarily by a mother struggling to make ends meet, Val grew up with an abusive father who was absent more often than he was present. The instability taught him independence early, but it also left him searching for something his childhood had never provided: structure, purpose and men he could depend upon.

He found all three in the Army.

Determined to prove himself, Val volunteered for Ranger selection and earned his place among the ranks of the Army's Rangers. The demanding lifestyle suited him. Expectations were clear. Competence mattered. The man beside you was judged by what he did when things went wrong rather than what he claimed when things were easy.

For the first time in his life, Val knew exactly where he belonged.

During a training mission supporting elements within Joint Special Operations Command, Val encountered operators from the military's premier special mission unit—Delta Force.

From that moment forward, he had a new objective.

Someday, he would become one of them.

Then September 11, 2001 changed everything.

America entered the Global War on Terror, and the profession Val had chosen suddenly carried consequences far beyond training ranges and selection courses. When his opportunity to attend Delta Force Assessment and Selection finally came, Val understood exactly what was being asked of him.

He was selected.

For the next fifteen years, Val operated at the absolute tip of the American military spear. The missions changed. The countries changed. The enemies changed. Val did not. He became the quiet professional others depended upon when situations deteriorated and decisions had to be made without the luxury of time.

But years spent in the shadows also taught him something else.

Orders and righteousness were not always the same thing.

On what would become his final military operation, Val was confronted with a choice: obey the order he had been given or do what he knew was right.

He chose the hard right over the easy wrong.

The mission ended. His career effectively ended with it.
