Tessa Willis's fascination with the ancient world began with the faith of her parents. Raised on the stories of Scripture, she became particularly interested in the places where biblical history seemed to intersect with the unexplained. Unlike her parents, however, Tessa was skeptical of supernatural explanations. She wanted evidence—something that could be excavated, examined, dated, and proven.
That pursuit eventually drew her toward one of archaeology's most controversial subjects: the persistent historical accounts of giants.
What began as curiosity became an obsession. Across cultures separated by oceans and centuries, Tessa found remarkably similar traditions describing beings of extraordinary size and strength. More troubling were the biblical accounts of the Nephilim—the offspring of rebellious heavenly beings and human women described in the ancient world.
Tessa became convinced that these stories preserved the distorted memory of something real.
Her willingness to pursue that possibility put her increasingly at odds with the academic establishment. Evidence that challenged accepted historical narratives was dismissed, careers took precedence over uncomfortable questions, and Tessa discovered that institutions dedicated to uncovering the past could be remarkably hostile toward anyone who threatened the version of it they had already accepted.
Rather than abandon her research, she went deeper.
At the urging of her mentor, Dr. Andrew "Rocky" Rockwell, Tessa devoted years to studying Enochian, an obscure language believed by some to have origins stretching back to the antediluvian world. If the Nephilim had existed, she reasoned, the ruins and artifacts they left behind might contain a record waiting for someone capable of reading it.
Her determination was tempered by only one constant source of concern: her older brother.
Following the deaths of Cody's wife and daughter in a tragic automobile accident, Tessa watched him withdraw into himself and increasingly disappear into his work. Their relationship remained close, but Cody's instinct to protect his younger sister only intensified. Tessa loved him for it—and resented it in equal measure. Their father had raised both of them to be self-reliant, and Tessa had spent most of her adult life reminding Cody that those lessons applied to her too.
Then an opportunity arrived that seemed capable of vindicating everything she had spent her career pursuing.
A secretive organization called North Spear claimed to have discovered an ancient temple deep in Peru. Inside was a sealed sarcophagus believed to contain the biological remains of an impossibly large ancient king.
They needed an archaeologist.
More importantly, they needed someone who could read what was written inside.
For Tessa Willis, it was the discovery she had spent her entire career waiting for.
She accepted before she understood exactly who had come looking for her.
