THE GIFT

They did not come as conquerors.

At first, they came as teachers.

The Watchers had observed mankind from the beginning. They understood the movements of the heavens, the properties hidden within the earth, and principles of creation humanity had only begun to comprehend.

When they abandoned their appointed place, they brought that knowledge with them.

To mankind, it must have seemed like a gift.

They taught men to draw metals from stone and shape them into tools and weapons. They revealed methods of cultivation, medicine and construction. They taught mankind to chart the heavens, measure the movements of the stars and recognize patterns within the natural world that might otherwise have taken generations to discover.

Civilization accelerated.

Cities grew. Harvests increased. Armies became stronger. Men who had once struggled merely to survive began mastering the world around them.

And humanity welcomed its teachers.

But the knowledge had never been forbidden because knowledge itself was evil.

It had been forbidden because mankind was not ready for it.

The Watchers gave humanity the power to accomplish things it had not yet developed the wisdom to control. Every discovery opened another door. Every answer created another question.

And eventually, the lessons changed.

The Watchers began revealing knowledge that could not be learned from the earth—knowledge of the unseen realm, of the beings who inhabited it, and of boundaries the Creator had established between their world and ours.

Those boundaries were not all walls.

Some were commandments.

Lines creation had been given the freedom to cross—and the wisdom to leave untouched.

The Watchers revealed the nature of heavenly beings and the order from which they had come. They taught mankind sacred names, symbols and languages. They revealed places where the physical and spiritual worlds intersected, the significance of celestial cycles, and ways the conditions of the earthly realm could affect what occurred beyond it.

They taught that life itself could be manipulated.

That blood could preserve an inheritance.

That creation contained mechanisms mankind had never been intended to command.

The Watchers had already crossed the boundary between obedience and rebellion.

Then they taught mankind how to follow.

Humanity had learned to shape metal.

Now it wanted to know how to shape creation itself.

WHAT THEY TAUGHT

The knowledge spread faster than anyone could control it.

What the Watchers revealed to a handful of men passed quickly into the hands of kings, priests, craftsmen and warriors. Secrets became trades. Trades became institutions. And knowledge once belonging to the heavenly host became the foundation of a civilization transformed almost overnight.

The earth yielded its metals.

Bronze became armor. Iron became weapons. The same knowledge that produced tools for cultivation armed increasingly powerful kingdoms for war.

The heavens surrendered their patterns.

Stars became calendars. Celestial movements guided harvests and navigation. But men also began searching the heavens for signs of power, destiny and knowledge of events yet to come.

The human body surrendered its secrets.

Plants became medicines. Wounds could be treated. Life could be prolonged. Yet the study of life eventually became the desire to alter it—to preserve desirable traits, manipulate bloodlines and reproduce what the Watchers themselves had begun.

And then came knowledge no craftsman could discover and no scholar could derive from observation.

Knowledge of the unseen.

Names belonging to beings mankind had never encountered.

Symbols whose meaning predated human language.

Places where the boundary between the physical and spiritual worlds behaved differently.

Celestial alignments that carried significance far beyond the movement of stars.

The Watchers taught mankind that creation possessed an order.

Then they taught them how that order could be manipulated.

And with every mystery revealed, mankind's dependence upon the Creator diminished.

They studied the heavens without seeking the One who made them. They learned the workings of creation while rejecting the authority that governed it. What had once inspired reverence gradually produced something else entirely.

Pride.

If the heavens could be understood, perhaps they could be mastered.

If creation obeyed laws, perhaps those laws could be exploited.

And if the Watchers could descend from Heaven bearing knowledge, power and wonders beyond anything mankind had known, then perhaps mankind no longer needed an unseen God at all.

The teachers became intermediaries.

The intermediaries became rulers.

And eventually, the Watchers themselves became gods in the eyes of men.

The result was not enlightenment.

It was knowledge without wisdom.

Weapons became deadlier. Kings became more powerful. Bloodlines were manipulated. Spiritual practices emerged around beings mankind had once known nothing about.

Every lesson gave humanity greater command over creation.

And every lesson drew them farther from its Creator.

By the time mankind understood the danger, the knowledge could no longer be contained.

The most dangerous of those teachings had already been gathered together.

Recorded.

Preserved.

Not upon paper.

Not within a book.

But upon something intended to survive the civilization that possessed it.

THE TABLET OF THE WATCHERS

Not all of the knowledge revealed by the Watchers was entrusted to memory.

Some of it was recorded.

Ancient accounts speak of a single artifact created during the years before the Flood—a great tablet attributed to Azazel himself, upon which the most dangerous teachings of the Watchers were preserved.

Its construction remains unlike anything known from the ancient world.

So does its purpose.

What is known is that the Tablet did not survive the final days of the Watchers intact.

It was broken into five fragments.

The surviving pieces became objects of enormous importance among the descendants of the Watchers. To the Nephilim who possessed them, they represented more than knowledge.

They represented inheritance.

Authority.

A birthright.

Kings carried them. Bloodlines guarded them. And after the Flood erased the civilization that had first possessed them, the fragments disappeared into history.

Most of mankind eventually forgot they had ever existed.

Some families did not.

Across thousands of years, fragments have surfaced in places separated by continents, civilizations and entire ages of human history.

Never together.

And never without someone searching for the others.

What the complete Tablet contains has been lost.

What it was intended to accomplish is unknown.

But those who have spent generations searching for its fragments appear convinced of one thing:

The Tablet was never meant merely to be read.
